Rob Wall says if it hadn't been for the My Own Business course he took a few years ago, he would have never made it as the owner of his own retail store - and a successful one at that.
With odds overwhelmingly against him, he was determined to succeed. Two months after taking the MOBI course, he opened a tool store in Mesquite, Nevada. On grand opening day, he says he made $6,736, "After that, it just got better," Rob said. So much better, in fact, he was soon able to purchase a new truck and boat. "For 90 percent of the time we were in business, we were in the black."
But if it hadn't been for the My Own Business course, Rob says the business "would have never walked."
" I would have failed within the first year. I was a professional soldier with no background in things like leasing, marketing and inventory control. I just had a desire to sell tools."
Rob took the course in 1995 at the La Habra Civic Center. He recalls of all the persons taking the course, he was the only one considering retail. The rest were going into service-oriented businesses, which are less likely to fail. He was impressed by the honesty of the instructors who were willing to share their personal experiences and failures. "It was encouraging to hear their stories," he said.
He actually started negotiating a lease for his new store while taking the course. With his course notes in hand, he was able to bargain and handle a successful negotiation with his future landlord. "That MOBI notebook turned me into a tiger," he says.
Rob says the MOBI course gave him all the tools he needed to start his business. "All I had to do was apply them. For anyone thinking of starting a business, I highly recommend it," Rob said.
The MOBI "graduate" sold his business recently because a family illness forced his return to California. As soon as the family issue is resolved, he plans to open another store. Using his MOBI notes, of course.
