Maureen Costello Wholesale Distributor What mistakes are made by independant retailers? |
|
| I think the biggest mistake that I see that independent retailers fall into is a lot of times they don't sell the best selling brands. There's a reason the best selling brands are the best selling brands. Larger numbers of people are looking to purchase them. And when an independent retailer chooses not to carry a big selling brand because they think that is how they are going to differentiate themselves from other retailers they are actually turning down the opportunity to sell to a wide variety of customers. And every customer who comes through the door is worth money. They are coming in with cash. They are willing to give you that cash to help you pay your rent and if you're not set up to be able to service that customer and you basically turn them away because you don't carry what they are looking for. You not only lose the opportunity to sell them that product but all the other products in your store that you might have higher margin on. so I think the biggest mistake is not carrying a wide enough variety of product and not having any and in some instances any of the leading brands available that vast majority of consumers are purchasing. | |
